As head coach, Tom Gilburg coached F&M’s football team for 28 seasons from 1975 to 2002. His teams compiled a record of 160-111-2 and won 10 conference championships, five in the Middle Atlantic Conference and five in the Centennial Conference. During his career, he coached eight 1st team All-Americans and 11 conference MVPs.
Gilburg first arrived at F&M in 1964 as a head lacrosse coach for the club team. His first lacrosse win was against Notre Dame. He later left to be an assistant football coach at Hofstra and Lehigh before returning to F&M as head football coach.
A graduate of Syracuse University in 1959, Gilburg was named the school’s “Athlete of the Year” in his senior season, when as a tackle and nose guard, the Orangemen beat Texas to win the National Championship. He was selected in the second round of the 1961 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts and played five seasons at offensive tackle and punter. Gilburg also played lacrosse at Syracuse.
