Gene Garber's only postseason win came in the first game of the 1977 National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Garber got the last out of the seventh and pitched a clean eighth inning before the Phillies scored 2 runs in the top of the ninth to win 7-5. The Phils lost the next 3 games to lose the series 3 games to 1.

The only Phillies pitcher to win a postseason game before that year was Grover Cleveland Alexander, who won Game 1 of the 1915 World Series 3-1 over the Boston Red Sox. The Phils dropped the next 4 games and the series.
