J.P. McCaskey High School senior Jahsier Reeves returns at running back and wide receiver for the Red Tornado this season.
Here’s a Q&A conducted with Reeves at L-L League Football Media Day on Friday, Aug. 7.
Q: What’s your individual football journey?
“I started playing football when I was around nine years old. I was athletic as a kid. I’ve been playing since then. I love the game. I love the contact. It’s the main thing I like about football.”
Q: What does your passion for football look like beyond the field?
“I watch the NFL. I started watching some college football.”
Q: Who is your favorite player?
“DeVonta Smith.”
Q: What have you worked on individually over the offseason to improve your game?
“I’ve been moving slower since getting injured last year. I’m starting to build up confidence more, not worrying about the injury. It was something with my knee. I tore my meniscus and sprained my LCL. No surgery. I’ve been in physical therapy for three months. I just started getting back in the gym.”
Q: What are some strengths of this year’s team heading into preseason camp?
“Our skill players have a lot of potential. Speed, talent. Our defense.”
Q: This is Year Two for head coach Todd Mealy at J.P. McCaskey. So he’s had a year or so to establish a new culture. How has it changed over the last 12 months?
“It definitely has changed. We have more people committed to the team. Coach Mealy has worked hard to bring everyone together.”
Q: Do you have any siblings?
“I have four siblings. I’m the oldest.”
Q: What responsibilities come with that?
“I’ve had to grow up a little faster.”
Q: Time for some fun questions. Do you know what kind of car your coach drives? If so, what nickname would you give your coach’s car?
“I can’t remember the specific make and model he drives but the nickname I’d give it would be the Mealymobile.”
Q: You’re stranded in the locker room for 24 hours with unlimited snacks and one video game. What’s the game you have with you?
“NBA2K.”
Q: What’s the dumbest thing you’ve argued about with a teammate?
“Probably arguing over jersey numbers. Originally I wanted No. 4. But a lot of people wanted No. 4. So I just went with No. 15.”
Q: Let’s say you could go back in time three years ago. What advice would you give to yourself as a freshman?
“Have some more confidence, be yourself, push harder, work harder.”
